Landfill
leachate is a particularly difficult effluent to treat.
Leachate production and quality can vary significantly
due to rainfall, variation in capping, vegetation and
groundwater ingress. As a site ages, the characteristics
of leachate change markedly with reducing BOD and ammonia
and increases in dissolved iron and metals. These factors
mean that any treatment process must be sufficiently flexible
to cope with both short-term fluctuations and longer-term
gradual changes.
